They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Beryl was born on 1 March 1916; she married Lance Young in 1939. She is listed at 20 Barton Street as a milliner in 1937 at which time she would have been 21 years old. As she married 2 years later it can be assumed that her career as a milliner was relatively short. This is part of a large donation of material from the Deakin, Mair and Young families. The Deakin, Mair and Young families had many connections with Mont Albert and Surrey Hills.A light brown flyer with brown printing advertising the services of Miss B Mair, milliner located in the Moran & Cato's Building at the corner of Whitehorse and Union Roads, Mont Albert.Nil beryl mair, milliner, moran & cato, t&s press, businesses -

Manufactured Glass, jar 'Mason's', c1900
A Mason jar is a moulded glass jar used in canning to preserve food. The mouth of the jar has screw threads on its outer perimeter to accept a metal ring (or "band"). The band, when screwed down, presses a separate stamped steel disc-shaped lid against the rim of the jar. An integral rubber ring on the underside of the lid creates a hermetic seal to the jar. The bands and lids usually come with new jars, and bands and lids are also sold separately; while the bands are reusable, the lids are intended for single use when canning. The Mason jar was invented and patented in November1858 by Philadelphia tinsmith John Landis Mason. The same design was used on the jars well into the 1900'sThe early settlers of Moorabbin Shire had to be self sufficient and grew their own fruit and vegetables even if not market gardeners They preserved their produce for use all year. Book - Reference Teaching, Circa 1963
This teacher's aid publication targets the creative and imaginative areas of primary school children's development. It is in a time period at the beginning of television(home intrusion) broadcasts and concentrates on the mental and physical tasks that produce tangible(physical) outcomes. The book concentrates on furthering the students abstract regions of their imagination. This was in a period where physical not electronic flexibility were the target of development. The increase in visual communications both at home and outside the home through social media means has intruded into the fundamentals that is presented in this teacher's aid publication. This publication is significant to both the Alpine and the Kiewa Valley regions because it demonstrates the Victorian State's Educational objectives of this period in time (1960's - 70's). The primary school's educational objectives were to enhance the development of school children's abstract mental abilities. These abilities prompted the mental processes to "think outside of the square" and is one of the major factors behind the development of "new inventions". This ability has produced many "Australian" inventions that have had worldwide applications. This book has a hard cover with photographs of "school" children constructing various "simple" items.Inside cover has a sticker "HALL'S BOOK STORE" and underneath in smaller print "New, Used and Rare Books" underneath this "371 Bourke Street, Melbourne' underneath "262 Chapel Street, Prahran". On the fly leaf is stamped "STATE SCHOOL 4590 BOGONG Vic" and written below "1769" 680 DIM"book, school, mental and physical stimulation, school activities -

Belt Money, Circa 1950
This money, belt made of soft leather, would have been used in the mid 1900's by horse riding traders or wealthy property owners. It could also have been used by miners or other commercial business men. The main criteria for such a belt is security for valuables during travel on horseback. Commercial traders who plied their wares on horseback or caravans during a period where poor roads and flood prone rivers could dislodge wallets or money "sacks".The Kiewa Valley in the early 1900's was an environment which was frequented by the "canny" travelling salesman using dirt tracks and having to cross swollen rivers and creeks throughout the year. Travelling times within the rural areas in and surrounding the valley called for more frequent stops in bush lands. Camping presented itself with great challenges not to loose small cumbersome coin and notes. Local banks were of short supply and although bartering was a thriving method of transactions within the Valley traders from other regions were not so forth coming. Where ever possible local "trades" were called upon more than in city areas for limited products of a rural incline. This "vintage" handcrafted money belt has been professionally made circa 1950's. It appears as though it might have been made in a saddlery. There are five pockets each fastened by black painted "press studs". The stitching is of a high standard and the pockets are large and well defined. The buckle is circular with one fastening pin.handcrafts, leather work, vintage money belt, personal effects. -

Bowl Carnival Glass, circa early 1900s
This particular glass bowl was a favoured ornamental type room "brightener" in the early 1900's. Although referred to as a "nappy bowl" this bowl has not the capacity for nappies but for nappy pins. This was a period in time before the nappy ties and instant nappy covers. This has relevance as an object that was both practical for the early 1900's nappy changes and provided some visual relief for any "drab" household ambience, especial in rural homes. The early to mid 1900's, rural households, on the whole, were more practical and not designed for entertainment. This reflected the more serious nature which were governed by aspects of providing a living from the land and unreliable weather. By placing visually attractive ornaments within various rooms (lounge/living rooms) the transformation from a stark external environment to a more warm and friendly area was achieved. This dark amber (Marigold) carnival glass 5 inch nappy bowl has a Kookaburra press molded base and wattle blossom with waratah and flannel flower sides. The bowl has a twelve scolloped rippled rim. Initially this type of bowl was reintroduced(from Roman times) into the 19th and 20th Century (modern age) by a United States glass manufacturer..Manufacturer's mark at the base illegible nappy bowls, nappy pin holders, visual mood changing ornaments
